The five Tredwell sisters haunt separately, not in tandem, at the Merchant House Museum. Built in 1832, this red brick and white marble row house offers a glimpse of life in Manhattan between the War of 1812 and the Civil War.
GREENWICH VILLAGE
Aaron Burr, the Eternal Romeo
Aaron Burr is New York City’s most amorous ghost. He also sometimes hangs out at D’Agostino Residence Hall (110 West Third Street) of New York University, where once upon a time he had his private stables. The area marks the site of one of early New York’s most famous estates, Richmond Hill, where Vice President John Adams lived. He rented it from his friend, Aaron Burr. The young ladies in the residence claim that he still pulls up in a horse and carriage in an effort to take them on a romantic rendezvous. A series of restaurants in the former stables on the site, before they were torn down to make way for the dormitory, reported his ghostly dining presence. His nineteenth century–style clothing attracted people’s attention.
Aaron Burr was a randy dandy in his old age. He married the widowed Mrs. Jumel, who divorced him on his deathbed a few years later; he was guilty of adultery even at his advanced age of eighty! You can’t keep a romantic ghost down.
What makes haunting by Aaron Burr so strange is that he is buried at the Princeton Cemetery. His arch nemesis Alexander Hamilton has a shorter commute from Trinity Church.
